Why Use RHYTHM To Monitor Pulse

Achieving your exercise goals does not happen accidentally, it requires planning and guidance.

  • By keeping an eye on your cardiovascular intensity, you have a better chance of optimizing your time in the gym.
  • Working at too high an intensity can lead to burnout while taking it too easy makes it difficult to achieve even the simplest of goals.

  • The Scosche RHYTHM Armband Pulse Monitor tracks your intensity by monitoring your pulse to let you know if you are in your ideal training zone.

    About Resting Heart Rate

The number of times a heart beats in 60 seconds while at rest represents your Resting Heart Rate (RHR). BPM, or Beats Per Minute, is the common term used when describing heart rate. RHR tells us how strong our cardiovascular system is. To accurately assess your RHR, you should measure before getting out of bed. Any muscle exertion can lead to a rise in heart rate as the body starts moving.

How to measure resting heart rate:

  • Step 1 - Bring your body to a state of relaxation. This can be done by relaxing for 15-20 minutes.
  • Step 2 - RHR can be most accurately measured at the Radial Pulse; this is on the underside of your wrist on the thumb side. To measure, place your index, middle and ring fingertips on the thumb side of your wrist. Adjust until you find your pulse.
  • Step 3: Once located, track the number of beats that occur in 15 seconds, then multiply that by 4.

  • Example RHR calculation:
    15 Beats in 5 seconds
    15 x 4 = 60 BPM (Beats Per Minute)

    About Maximum Heart Rate

Maximum heart rate, or HRmax, is the peak heart rate an exerciser can safely reach while involved in activity. To determine your HRmax the Scosche RHYTHM App uses the formula (220 - your age) = your HRmax.

    Example of (40 year old) HRmax: 220 - 40 = 180 BPM

    About Training Zones

Training Zones are calculated as percentages of HRmax. They reflect workout intensity and the bodys adaptation. There are five training zones used in the Scosche RHYTHM App:

    Resting Zone 40-59% HRmax

  • This zone is the lowest level of intensity that will result in cardiovascular benefits. This is the ideal zone for long, slow endurance training, brisk walks on an athletes recovery day and for the neophyte exerciser looking to improve overall health.
  • Weight Loss Zone 60-69% HRmax

  • Exercisers whose goal is to lose weight will benefit from paying attention to Heart rate as much as any athlete. By remaining in the weight loss zone, one can be sure to achieve an increased calorie burn when compared to strolling or promenading through your work out. This is a great zone for improving cardiovascular endurance and maintaining a consistent workout schedule without overtraining.
  • Fitness Zone 70-79% HRmax

  • This is the most frequently used target heart rate zone because it is typically the highest intensity that can be comfortably maintained during workouts. Above this zone, individuals frequently have more difficulty chatting, and breathing becomes much more challenging.
  • Performance Zone 80-89% HRmax

  • Training in the Performance Zone increases the amount of oxygen you will utilize while exercising, and therefore improve your cardiovascular system. It also can result in a higher lactate tolerance; in other words, improved endurance and ability to resist fatigue.
  • Red Line Zone 90-100% HRmax

  • The Red Line Zone is typically only used by seasoned athletes, who only stay in this zone for short bursts such as interval training or sprinting. This zone is recommended for trained athletes and those who have been cleared to do so by their physician.
  • Finding your training zone ranges:

+ Calculating Weight Loss Zone based on 180 HRmax using the following formulas:

  • 60% - 180 x .60 = 108 BPM
  • 69% - 180 x .69 = 126 BPM
  • Weight Loss Zone would range from 108 - 126 BPM
