What is MagSafe®
If you have an iPhone® 12 and later, or have been thinking about upgrading to one, you may have some questions about their MagSafe magnetic capabilities.
MagSafe Explained
MagSafe is a proprietary magnetic system from Apple, featuring a circle of magnets inside the iPhone that provides a fast and easy way to attach:
Accessories to the phone
(such as a wallet or battery pack)
The phone to a magnetic mount
A charging puck to the phone
The phone to a wireless charging mount.
Note: MagSafe will only attach to MagSafe-compatible accessories so will not attract unwanted metal objects.
MagSafe Charging
Apple MagSafe phones use inductive wireless charging, just like the Qi wireless charging standard, with a charging coil inside the phone. The difference is that in MagSafe phones magnets encircle the wireless charging coil. These magnets align the phone precisely over the coil in a wireless charger for maximum charging efficiency – up to 15W.
Note: iPhone wireless charging without MagSafe is 7.5W.
Precise alignment of phone and charger makes wireless charging more reliable and efficient and holds the phone in place during charging, even if the phone vibrates or gets bumped or jostled in any way.
